Re: Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc. (Green Gables/Wells House)
Grant Application No. 22.h.sc.700.043 Acquisition Ranked for FY22 Funding
Dear (State Representative or Senator) :
As a resident in Brevard County, I am writing to ask for your assistance in providing grant funding for acquisition of Green Gables, located at 1501 S Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne, FL 32901. Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc. has been ranked for FY22 funding under the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, Historic Preservation Matching Grants Program, application number 22.h.sc.700.043. The project title is Acquisition of Green Gables/Wells House by Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc. Your support is of utmost importance to enable our non-profit to purchase the house in order to preserve the Queen Anne architecture, to share the over 125 years of Florida and local history and to create an educational and community center for all to enjoy.
This will be Green Gables last opportunity to save from destruction the historic home and over 1 acre of green space on the Indian River Lagoon and to restore this architectural Queen Anne style home. This estate is one of only three Queen Anne designs in the South Brevard area, and was the figurehead in one of the earliest developments in Melbourne named Riverview Village. Our agreement originally established in 2015 with the heirs to the estate will expire this year.
Green Gables owners, William and Nora Wells, purchased 150 acres and were instrumental in donating land and building community establishments. We are asking that you consider supporting funding for this acquisition grant for Green Gables for FY22 by funding the appropriation for the Department of State, Division of Historic Resources Special Category Grants. This would in-turn enable us to move forward with stabilization and more importantly, the rehabilitation and restoration of Green Gables to its original beauty and create a new community center.
Funding the essential historic preservation structures and programs represents a true investment in our State’s legacy multiplied many times over through public-private economic partnerships and ventures. Most importantly, it creates much needed jobs and ensures the protection of our historic resources. Thanking you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
(Name and Title)
